I will describe a simple, non-parametric model for connecting galaxy
luminosities to dark matter halos and subhalos. This model captures
the observed luminosity, scale, and redshift dependence of the galaxy
autocorrelation function surprisingly well. After describing the
implications of the success of this model, I will show how this model
can be put to use in understanding the build-up of stellar mass in
massive galaxies since z=1.
